You may have read in the press the shocking invasion of privacy
tactics currently being employed by some of the biggest ISPs in the
industry.
It has recently been confirmed that BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk
have been involved in secret browsing habit trials with a company called
Phorm (in BTs case this has been going on for over 12 months). These
companies have been allowing Phorm (an advertising broker) to track the
web-browsing history of their customers - details of which are
subsequently being sold to advertisers, allowing them to target their
ads to to the unwitting end-users.
Whilst it may seem unlikely, we can confirm that the entire list of
every web page visited by every user is sent to Phorm in "real time" as
links are clicked, in order that they can employ 'targeted advertising'
tactics.
Naturally these ISP's are not too keen on admitting this breach of
confidentiality - instead they prefer to feed their "valued" customers
platitudes of the various benefits - how it'll help combat phishing, how
the targeted adverts will be so much better than the random ones we all
see today etc. etc.!!!
Rumours are that Phorm are working with many more ISPs in the UK, in
particular the larger ISPs who will be using this as a highly lucrative
revenue stream. We consider these tactics to be simply wrong and nothing
short of a breach of trust by companies who's interest is purely
financial, and who appear to have a complete disregard of their
Customers privacy.
We would like to assure you we are not, have not and will not work
with Phorm or any similar organisation who blatantly invade the privacy
of unwitting customers.
For those of you with friends, relatives or colleagues connected to
the internet with one of the above ISPs, it may be worth letting them
know that 'Big-Brother' really is watching them and trustworthy ISPs
(that would be us) really do exist !
